Rotator cuff injuries such as impingement syndrome, tendonitis/tendonosis and tears can be successfully treated using strengthening exercises. Resisted scaption is an exercise that targets the supraspinatus muscle (the most common rotator cuff muscle to be injured).
How to Perform:
- From a standing position, grasp a light to medium weight in each hand (such as a dumbbell or water bottle)
- Start with the weights next to each outer hip
- Raise the weights upwards at a 45 degrees angle up to the level of your shoulders
- Lower the weights to the start position (slow and controlled)
- Repeat for 10-15 reps or fatigue
- The exercise may produce shoulder pain, but the exercise can be continued as long as the pain produced during the exercise does not remain for longer than 10-20 minutes afterwards
- Perform 3 sets daily and increase the resistance when the exercise is no longer fatiguing at 10-15 reps per set
Rotator cuff treatment involves strengthening the muscles around the shoulder including the supraspinatus. Resisted scaption can be very effective.
We always recommend making an appointment for any new onset spinal or extremity pain as well as for re-aggravations of previous symptoms to properly diagnose the underlying cause and to determine the most appropriate treatment.
