Single limb balance exercises are useful for the treatment of ankle sprains. Ankle sprains most commonly are categorized as inversion in which the ankle rolls inward producing injury to the ligaments on the outer ankle. How to perform:
- Begin by standing next to a wall, piece of furniture or table so that you can use as support in case of loss of balance
- Lift one leg off the ground about 6 inches
- Maintain the position until you can no longer maintain the position without losing balance
- Switch sides and perform on the opposite side
- Perform 2-3 sets per side
- When the exercise becomes easier, you can progress by elevating your foot higher off the ground, standing on an unstable surface and/or closing your eyes
Single limb balance exercises can be very helpful for strengthening ligaments around the ankle that may be injured during an ankle sprain. We always recommend making an appointment for any new onset spinal or extremity pain as well as for re-aggravations of previous symptoms to properly diagnose the underlying cause and to determine the most appropriate treatment.
