A chiropractic adjustment, also known as spinal manipulation, is one of many treatments provided by Chiropractic Physicians. The chiropractic adjustment typically involves the use of hands, but can also be performed via a hand-held device such as the Activator. Chiropractors use spinal manipulation to decrease pain and improve range of motion in the spine. There are a variety of adjustment techniques, with most Chiropractors utilizing the Diversified Technique. Manipulation technique also varies depending on patient factors such as preference, age and co-morbidities.
- Chiropractic adjustments are effective for the treatment of a variety of symptoms such as upper back pain, low back pain, neck pain, headaches and even shoulder pain
- Because spinal manipulation is performed by the provider, Chiropractors will often give patients home exercises to perform in conjunction with the adjustment so that patients can develop self-management strategies to do at home
- Contraindications for spinal manipulation include: cancer, blood clotting disorders, compression fracture, and hypermobility disorders
Chiropractic adjustments can be a great non-surgical treatment option for spinal as well as extremity complaints.
We always recommend making an appointment for any new onset spinal and/or extremity pain as well as for re-aggravations of previous symptoms to properly diagnose the underlying cause and to determine the most appropriate treatment.
